The California Voting Rights Act (“CVRA”) expanded the protections provided to minority groups under the Federal Voting Rights Act. The CVRA provides members of a protected class (a class of voters who are members of a race, color, or language minority group) with a cause of action against political subdivisions if a class member can establish that the votes of its class were diluted through a combination of racially polarized voting and an at-large election system. Kingsley Bogard LLP’s CVRA seminar is designed to inform administrators and elected officials of their agency’s obligations under the CVRA and assist with the development of strategies for resolution of potential conflicts that may arise. Each seminar is custom tailored to meet the specific needs of your agency. Possible seminar topics include: (1) the CVRA’s basic elements and explanations of technical definitions in the act; (2) an examination of common threads among public entities sued under the CVRA; (3) procedural options and essential requirements for exploring a change in voting methods; and (4) an overview of critical considerations under the Federal Voting Rights Law.
