Cyberbullying

Folsom Cordova Unified School District
Folsom, California

Technology has made our lives much more convenient.  It is not without its drawbacks, however.  It has also given public school students the means and opportunity to bully and harass their fellow students, often anonymously.  Because the bullying and harassment occurs via technological devices, it can be difficult to trace.  In addition, it can make discipline difficult, because a district must establish a nexus between the bullying and school attendance.  Responding to cyberbullying presents substantial challenges including issues of personal privacy and First Amendment Rights.  The Legislature has amended the Education Code’s student discipline provisions several times in an attempt to address these issues.  This seminar will provide a summary of the relevant Education Codes, along with practical advice regarding how to implement them legally and efficiently.  It will also provide tips on preventing cyberbullying before it happens.
